“My father went out for a walk or something and he went down to the beach or the park, anyway. He saw the waves coming, so he ran home and told us, you know, ‘Nigero, nigero’ (Run away, run away). (Laughs.) So, ‘Tidal wave, tidal wave!’ So we just ran up on the hill in the back where the GIs had their training camp. And we were watching the waves come in.” —Edith Yonenaka
